Visit of the former EU Commissioner Mr. Franz Fischler to Montenegro

During a visit of the former EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Mr. Franz Fischler to Montenegro meetings with different high officiales, stakeholders and partners were organised by the AMA Twinning project in Podgorica.

In a consultation meeting together with the Head of EU Delegation Ambassador Leopold Maurer, Minister Tarzan Milosevic and Assistant Minister Igor Golubovic from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance for Rural Development Programme (IPARD) and challenges in bringing the sector in line with the EU Agriculture and Rural Development Policy were presented.
In the meeting, the former EU Commissioner Franz Fischler said that Montenegrin agriculture needs clear goals and priorities, participative planning, a sound strategy, increased financial support from national budget, good management and also good monitoring and reporting.

Mr. Fischler also participated in a panel discussion at the Faculty of Economy organised in cooperation with the initiative group Alpbach. The discussion focussed on the challenges of sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas in Montenegro. Mr. Fischler underlined that Montenegrin agriculture is characterized by small number of arable areas, large differences between rural zones in south, central and northern region, small farms and prevailing livestock farming.
